DENVER, Colo. – Colorado State’s Cameron Harrell continued an eventful summer for the Rams men’s golf program over the weekend when the senior-to-be tied for fifth at the HealthONE Colorado Open at Green Valley Ranch Golf Club, taking home top amateur honors at the 50th-annual event.
Harrell, who last week was named to the Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar list by the Golf Coaches Association of America, posted a 72-hole score of 277 (-7), opening with a Round 1 score of 69, and firing back-to-back 70s in Rounds 2 and 3. He closed on Sunday with a 2-under par 69 to finish seven strokes off the pace of winner Ian Davis of Edmond, Okla., two strokes behind second-place finisher Brandon Hagy of Westlake Village, Calif., and just one shot behind Brock MacKenzie (Yakima, Wash.) and Nathan Lashley (Scottsdale, Ariz.) who tied for third overall.
The Colorado Springs native was the top Coloradan represented on the leader board, one shot better than Luke Symons of Aurora, Colo. Harrell also finished four strokes ahead of the next amateur competitor, Cole Nygren from Longmont, Colo., a junior next season at Cal Poly.
Zen Brown, a Colorado State standout from 2005-09 finished tied with Nygren for 13th, four strokes behind Harrell with a 3-under par 281, while Harrell’s former teammate Parker Edens, who graduated in May with a degree communications, finished tied for 34th with a 3-over par score of 287.
