PUEBLO, Colo. (GoThunderWolves.com - Sept. 20, 2013) - CSU-Pueblo needed five sets to outlast winless Fort Lewis Friday, downing the Skyhawks 24-26, 25-12, 25-16, 23-25, 15-5 in the Pack's conference opener.
CSU-Pueblo showed flashes of brilliance paired with untimely struggles that allowed the Skyhawks to remain in the match.
In the first set, the ThunderWolves held a 23-22 lead, but a service error and an attack error late in the set helped hand the first set to the Skyhawks 26-24.
The ThunderWolves rallied, however, with dominant volleyball in the second and third sets. Using back-to-back-to-back kills by Marissa Calvillo (So., Rio Rancho, N.M.), The Pack roared out to an 11-1 lead in the second set, riding the wave to a 25-12 win.
The third set was more of the same, going up 5-1 early to leave the Skyhawks playing from behind as it snagged a 25-16 win.
After Fort Lewis forced a fifth set by converting the final three points of a back-and-forth set to win 25-23, CSU-Pueblo was firing on all cylinders in the fifth and final set. Four Fort Lewis attack errors combined with two kills by Brianna Bryant (Sr., Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) helped the Pack to go up 6-1. A flurry of kills my Sierra Moran (Jr., San Diego, Calif.) to close the match handed the Pack a 15-5 match-clinching win.
With the victory, CSU-Pueblo has now won four of its past five matches and is 4-1 at home so far in 2013. The Pack will try to move to 2-0 in conference play Saturday night when it hosts Colorado Mesa.
