SAN ANGELO, Texas (GoThunderWolves.com - Sept. 6, 2013) - CSU-Pueblo's rough start to 2013 continued Friday as the Pack lost two matches to open the Angelo State Invitational in San Angelo, Texas.
The Pack fell in four sets to Tarleton State, 25-21, 24-26, 25-21, 25-13 before losing in three to Angelo State, 25-10, 25-12, 25-13.
Granted, Friday's opponents weren't exactly pushovers - Tarleton State won 23 games last season while Angelo State won 29 games, advancing all the way to NCAA Division II Sweet Sixteen. But CSU-Pueblo was hoping to put up a better showing against two of the region's best teams.
In the early game, the ThunderWolves were preoccupied with avoiding Tarleton State's stellar blocking game. CSU-Pueblo fell victim to 15 team blocks, and as a result, the ThunderWolves logged 30 attack errors and an attack percentage of .081 compared to Tarleton State's .209.
Despite the discrepancy, the ThunderWolves held strong and played Tarleton close throughout. CSU-Pueblo never trailed by more than five points in the first set, led for the bulk of the second set - a 26-24 CSU-Pueblo win - and led all the way through the third set before Tarleton took six of the final seven points to wrest away a 25-21 win. After the rough loss, the Pack fell 25-13 in the clinching set.
Unfortunately, the flatness of the final set against Tarleton carried over against Angelo State. The Pack began the match by getting in a 13-0 hole, and it never really recovered as the Rambelled dominated throughout.
CSU-Pueblo will look to rebound Saturday as the Angelo State Invitational concludes. With games against arguably the top three teams in the region under its belt, the Pack will face Arkansas-Fort Smith and Dallas Baptist.
