WACO, Texas (GoThunderWolves.com - Dec. 17, 2013) - CSU-Pueblo junior defensive end Darius Allen (Jr., Pueblo, Colo.), fresh off his selection as the Gene Upshaw Award recipient, has been named one of just 25 All-Americans recognized by the American Football Coaches' Association (AFCA), it was announced Tuesday.
Allen, the national sack leader with 15.5 sacks in 2013, becomes the first AFCA All-American in CSU-Pueblo history. It is the latest postseason honor for Allen, who has already been named to the Beyond Sports Network All-American squad, and been voted the NCAA Division II Super Region IV Defensive Player of the Year.
Monday, Allen won the Gene Upshaw Award as Division II's top lineman, making him the first CSU-Pueblo student-athlete since 1989 to be named a national player of the year.
The AFCA All-American squad is the most prestigious Division II All-American football team. The only All-American squad selected entirely by Division II's head football coaches, it is also the most exclusive, only honoring 25 total student-athletes on the squad (11 offense, 11 defense, three specialists).
