Arenado called up by Rockies; Nelson designated for assignment

DENVER – The Colorado Rockies announced today that the club selected the contract of infielder Nolan Arenado from Triple-A Colorado Springs. To make room on the 40-man roster for Arenado, the Rockies designated infielder Chris Nelson for assignment. Arenado (#28) will be looking to make his Major League debut today at Arizona (2:10 p.m. MDT).

Arenado, 22, began the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs where he has batted .364 (24-for-66) with 11 doubles, 3 home runs, 21 RBI and a 1.059 OPS (.392 OBP, .667 SLG) in 18 games for the Sky Sox. The Newport Beach, CA native leads the Pacific Coast League with his 11 doubles, while his 21 RBI lead the team. As a 20-year-old at High-A Modesto in 2011, Arenado set a Rockies Minor League record and led all Minor League players with 122 RBI. Arenado was selected by Colorado in the second round of the 2009 First Year Player Draft out of El Toro High School (Lake Forest, CA). He was ranked as the Rockies top prospect by Baseball America, and as the club’s No. 2 prospect by prior to the 2013 season.

Nelson, 27, was a member of the Rockies Opening Day roster for the second-straight season in 2013 and batted .242 (16-for-66) with 1 double, 2 triples, 4 RBI and 6 runs in 21 games. Nelson appeared in the Majors with Colorado during each of the last four seasons (2010-13). In 212 career Major League games, Nelson has batted .279 (172-for-616) with 33 doubles, 6 triples, 13 home runs, 73 RBI and a .738 OPS (.322 OBP, .416 SLG). Nelson was originally selected by the Rockies with the 9th overall pick in the first round of the 2004 First-Year Player Draft out of Redan High School in Stone Mountain, GA.

The Rockies currently have a full 40-man roster.
