Air Force’s Gunner and Truehl earn Atlantic Hockey weekly honors

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force’s Cole Gunner and Chris Truehl each earned Atlantic Hockey Association weekly awards in helping lead the Falcons to a sweep of first-place Mercyhurst, Feb. 7-8, at Cadet Ice Arena.
Gunner was named the Travel Team USA Player of the Week as he led the team with six points (2-4-6) in the series. Along with his linemates Scott Holm (LW) and Chad Demers (C), the Falcons’ top line scored six of the team’s seven goals against Lakers. On Friday, Gunner had a career high four points, including a career-best three assists. He had the first assist on Holm’s game-winner in the third period on Friday. On Saturday, after 58 scoreless minutes, Gunner created a turnover and had the only assist on Demers’ game-winner with 1:34 remaining. The junior from Richfield, Minn., then sealed the 2-0 win with an empty-netter.
Truehl was named the Travel Team USA Co-Rookie of the Week in earning two victories over the first-place Lakers. Mercyhurst entered the series ranked first in the conference and seventh in the nation in scoring offense. The freshman from Stoughton, Wis., held the Lakers to just three goals in the two games and posted a 1.50 goals-against average and a .951 saves percentage. On Friday, Truehl made 34 saves in the 5-3 win, the second most of his career. On Saturday, he recorded his third shutout in the last 11 games as he stopped all 24 shots he faced. For the season, Truehl ranks second in the AHA among all goalies with a 1.96 GAA and is fourth with a .923 saves percentage.
Air Force, 17-9-4, 12-6-3 AHA, is tied for third place in the conference. The Falcons travel to Buffalo, N.Y., for a two-game league series with Canisius, Friday-Saturday, Feb. 14-15, at 7:05 p.m. ET each night at the Buffalo State Sports Arena.
