Air Force scores 90 and beats New Orleans

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AP) - Mike Fitzgerald scored 16 points and Todd Fletcher and Michael Lyons added 14 each to lead hot-shooting Air Force to a 90-48 victory against New Orleans on Wednesday night. The Falcons improved to 11-6 while Privateers fell to 5-13.

Kamryn Williams had a season-high 10 points for the Falcons, including a thunderous put-back dunk at the end of the first half to give Air Force a 43-30 lead at the break. The Falcons shot 64.3 percent from the field in the game, their best mark since shooting 68.4 percent against Utah on Jan. 19, 2006, and made 10 of 18 (55.6 percent) shots from 3-point range.

Tre’ Coggins and Justin Hammonds each scored nine points and dished out a career-best eight and four assists, respectively.

“That was a good group (young, second-team guys) tonight,” said Air Force head coach Dave Pilipovich. “They play together as a group in practice. They battle every day in practice. They win a lot of the scrimmage situations we have each day in practice against the first group. We tease them about the white team being a better team. It was good to get those guys some minutes. They allowed us to rest some starters and take a look at what we have in the future.”

Air Force reached 90 points for a second straight game, the first time that has happened since the first two games of the 1998-99 season.

Rarlensee Nelson had 12 points and Lovell Cook 11 for the Privateers, who hit just five field goals (in 21 tries) in the second half after winning a triple-overtime game at home Monday night.

Air Force enjoyed a 35-20 rebounding advantage and had 27 assists, the most in one game since accumulating a school-record 36 against Doane College on Nov. 22, 1997.
