USAFA, Colo. -- The Air Force men’s golf team dominated the 2013 Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational, winning the tournament for the fourth time by 12 strokes over second-place UTEP on the Blue Course at the Academy’s Eisenhower Golf Club. The Falcons, who won the inaugural tournament in 1969, tied for the title in 2001 and won it again outright in 2005, finished the tournament at 15 under par with a three-round total of 849.

Senior Kyle Westmoreland won the individual title with a three-round total of 204 (-12), one stroke shy of the tournament record, set by Ryan Spears of Wichita State in 2007. Sophomore Matthew Dunn finished in a tie for second at 209 (-7) with Frederik Dreier of UTEP.

“I could not be prouder of Kyle and our team as a whole,” said Air Force head coach George Koury. “Their hard work over the summer and so far this fall paid off tremendously today. For Matt (Dunn) to play as solid as he did for three rounds gives us a great foundation moving forward.”

Westmoreland, who captured the third individual crown of his career, led from wire-to-wire after posting birdies on five of his first nine holes in the opening round on Sunday. He is the first Falcon to win the tournament since Ben Leestma won back-to-back titles in 2000 and ‘01. The only other Air Force player to win it was Brian Crawford, who tied for the championship in 1995.

“It is quite an honor to win the tournament named for someone who has done so much for Air Force golf,” said Westmoreland, speaking about Miranda, who was the Academy’s head coach for 25 years. “I want to thank my coaches, teammates and the fans that came out this weekend to support us. This is a great win for our team and a wonderful way to start our season.”

Senior Jack Howard fired a two-under par 70 on Monday to finish in a seventh place tie at -3, while fellow seniors Philip Colwell and Miguel Macias finished tied for 56th and 59th, respectively.

The Air Force “B” team finished in a tie with Colorado State for 12th in the 16-team field. The squad was led by seniors Todd Berglund and Ryan Kramer, who both tied for 25th place at +3.

The Falcons take a week off before heading to Erie, Colo., for the Mark Simpson Invitational hosted by the University of Colorado beginning Monday, Sept. 23.
