Updated: 05/14/2013 - I'm still focused on meeting my goal of doing a pull-up. And I'm almost there! But I'm always getting this question:
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - Air Force earned its first win of the season with a 4-1 victory over Robert Morris in an Atlantic Hockey Association game at the 84 Lumber Arena in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Air Force improved to 1-2-3 overall this season and 1-0-1 in the league. Robert Morris fell to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Air Force dominated play in the first period and capitalized late in the period on the power play. Chad Demers made a cross-box pass to Adam McKenzie in the left circle. McKenzie settled the puck down and sent a wrister toward the net that was redirected by Scott Holm at 16:18 of the first period. Air Force outshot Robert Morris, 15-3, in the first period.
Early in the second period, Air Force took a 2-0 lead on a power-play goal by Alex Halloran. John Kruse passed down low to Kyle De Laurell on the goal line. De Laurell made a pass through the crease to Halloran on the back door for his first goal of the season at 1:34.
Robert Morris got on the board with 5:51 remaining in third period. Colonial forward David Friedmann scored on a rebound to cut the Falcon lead to 2-1. The Colonials pulled their goalie with 1:31 remaining in favor of the extra attacker. On the opening faceoff, in the extra-attacker situation, Jason Fabian won the faceoff and the Falcons cleared the puck out of the zone. Casey Kleisinger took a shot at the empty-net, but it went wide. Just a few seconds later, Kleisinger again skated a puck into the zone and his tough-angle shot was wide. Tony Thomas punched the puck off the wall to Fabian who scored the empty-netter with 60 seconds left. RMU pulled its goalie again and Fabian sealed the win with his second empty-netter of the game. Dan Weissenhofer wrapped the puck around the boards and Kleisinger again skated the puck out of the zone. He fed Fabian at the blue who scored his fourth of the season.
Air Force outshot RMU, 30-23, in the game. AFA was 2-for-4 on the power play while RMU was 0-for-4. Jason Torf made 22 saves for the Falcons while Eric Levine made 26 for the Colonials.
"We were better tonight," head coach Frank Serratore said. "We scored the first goal, we out-special teamed them and, their goalie was good, but our was better. We were terrific in the first period. In the third period, they came at us with everything and it was anyone's ball game. Our sixth attacker defense got it done. Obviously, this was a tighter game than the 4-1 score indicates. We went on the road against two strong teams and got three points in two tough buildings. Any way you want to spin, that is a positive."
Air Force returns home for a two-game AHA series against Holy Cross, Friday-Saturday, Nov. 2-3, at the Academy's
