FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) -- Colorado State athletic director Paul Kowalczyk has undergone surgery to remove his cancerous prostate.

School spokesman Zak Gilbert said Kowalczyk's surgery on Thursday "went as well as could be expected." He said Kowalczyk "sent an e-mail to the staff (Friday) morning and text-messaged (football coach) Steve Fairchild and several others to let them know he was OK."

Kowalczyk expects to be released from the hospital Saturday and hopes to return to work by mid-August.

Kowalczyk, 52, has known for more than a year that he had prostate cancer, the second-most common cancer in American men behind skin cancer. It was detected in biopsies following his annual physical.
