Michael Vick To Plead Guilty In Dog Fighting Case

Michael Vick's lawyer isn't disclosing any details of the plea agreement Vick is entering into. He also won't say how much time the Atlanta Falcons quarterback can expect to serve in prison.

Attorney Billy Martin announced today in Virginia that Vick has agreed to plead guilty to federal dogfighting conspiracy charges. The offense could bring up to five years in prison and a quarter-million-dollar fine.

A hearing is set for Monday of next week. Vick's three co-defendants have all reached plea deals of their own.

According to Martin, salvaging Vick's NFL career was never a part of the discussions with prosecutors. He says the most important thing is to get Vick's life "back on track."

The NFL says in a statement that it condemns the conduct outlined in the charges. It says the conduct is "inconsistent" with what Vick had told the league and the Falcons.

The announcement came as a grand jury met in private. Prosecutors had said a superseding indictment was in the works. But the plea will probably mean Vick won't face additional charges.

Somebody please tell me why dogfighting is a crime. So what if he abused or killed his own dogs. He didn't steal others' pets to use in these fights. No humans were harmed in this dogfighting case. Something is seriously wrong with this society if they are more outraged by what happens to dumb animals than by murders and killing that other men have done to their own species. There was more outrage over dogfighting and killing losing dogs than there ever was when that wrestler killed his wife and son or when terrorists blow up innocent people daily in Iraq. President Bush should pardon Vick pronto. And all laws prohibiting dogfighting and cockfighting should be overturned.
