Nelson, Hawkins make final case to be Colorado's starting QB

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) -- Colorado Buffaloes coaches are expected to name a starting quarterback tomorrow.

Junior Nick Nelson and redshirt freshman Cody Hawkins made their final auditions at a scrimmage today at Folsom Field.

Head coach Dan Hawkins' son had a pass deflected that ended up being an interception, but he also hit Kendrick Celestine on a 46-yard pass across the middle that set up a touchdown.

Nelson rebounded from an interception on his first possession and led the Buffaloes on some long drives. He also threw a six-yard floater to tight end Nate Solder for a touchdown.

Meanwhile freshman quarterback Matt Ballenger threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to tight end Tyson DeVree.

The Buffaloes play Colorado State on September 1st.
