Cubs 6, Rockies 2

DENVER (AP) - Jason Marquis held the Rockies to five hits and added a key double as the Chicago Cubs beat the Colorado Rockies 6-2 on Friday night.

The Cubs won for the second straight night at Coors Field and stayed a half-game behind the NL Central Division leading Milwaukee Brewers, who beat the Houston Astros 5-4 in extra innings.

Marquis (9-7) lasted 6 2-3 innings, allowing only an unearned run. He didn't walk a batter and struck out five to win his first road game since May 2. He was 0-4 in his previous seven road starts since beating the Pirates 7-1 in Pittsburgh.

Marquis left the game with two outs in the seventh inning after hitting Colorado's Jeff Baker above the left eye with a pitch. Baker left the game and Marquis was replaced by Carlos Marmol, who walked pinch-hitter Ryan Spilborghs to load the bases, but fanned Wily Taveras to end the inning.

Jacque Jones went 3-for-5 with a homer and two RBIs. Matt Murton was also 3-for-5, and hit a ninth-inning homer off Manny Corpas. Jason Kendall went 3-for-4, and provided a two-run single for the Cubs, who arrived in Denver on a four-game losing streak.

Jones has nine hits in his last 14 at-bats, and six RBIs in his last two games.

The Rockies had been 21-5 at home since June 2, the best mark in baseball during that span, before looking flat in two straight losses to the Cubs.

The Cubs defeated Aaron Cook (8-7) for the first time in three starts. Cook was roughed up for five runs and eight hits over six innings and lost for first time in six starts.

He was 3-0 with a 2.31 ERA over his previous five starts and last lost on July 8 against Philadelphia.

The Cubs scored three unearned runs in the third inning to lead 3-0. After Jones reached on a bunt single, first baseman Baker threw the ball into left field attempting to get Jones at second base. One out later Mark DeRosa walked to load the bases, Mike Fontenot drove in a run with a ground ball and Kendall singled to center to score two runs.

Marquis doubled to center to open the fourth inning and scored when Jones doubled to the wall in left to make it 4-0.

Colorado got an unearned run back in its part of the fourth. Matt Holliday got aboard on DeRosa's error and third base and scored on Troy Tulowitzki's two-out double to left.

Jones hit his third homer of the season, a solo shot into the Rockies bullpen on an 0-1 count in the sixth inning.

The Rockies loaded the bases against Marmol in the eighth inning on infield singles to Kaz Matsui and Matt Holliday and a walk to Garrett Atkins.

Bobby Howry replaced Marmol, and retired Brad Hawpe on a pop out, got Tulowitzki to hit an RBI groundout, and then retired Yorvit Torrealba on a fly ball.
