Rockies 6, Royals 4

DENVER (AP) -- Brad Hawpe and Garrett Atkins hit home runs off Gil Meche -- the first earned runs the right-hander allowed on the road this season -- as the Colorado Rockies beat Kansas City 6-4 on Saturday night.

Todd Helton also homered and scored three runs for the Rockies, who received an impressive start from Taylor Buchholz (2-2). The right-hander gave up an unearned run and scattered five hits over seven innings to win for the first time since April 18.

Hawpe's two-run homer to deep center in the fourth inning ended Meche's scoreless streak on the road at 30 innings -- a run that spanned five starts. Atkins hit a three-run homer, his first since April 14, in the sixth.

Meche (3-2) lasted five innings in his shortest outing of the season. He gave up eight hits and five runs while striking out three, and saw his ERA rise from 1.91 to 2.44.

Ryan Shealy hit a three-run homer off Ramon Ramirez with two outs in the ninth. Brian Fuentes came on and got pinch-hitter Esteban German to ground out for his 11th save.

Despite the win, it was a painful night for the 25-year-old Buchholz, who improved to 4-0 in interleague play. Emil Brown's liner in the first caught him squarely on the right forearm. He shook off the injury and motioned he was fine after a few warmup tosses. In the sixth, Buchholz fouled a pitch off his left foot while batting and hopped around for a few minutes before drawing a walk.

Helton added a solo shot in the seventh off Joel Peralta, who replaced Meche an inning earlier. Helton's fifth homer of the season came a pitch after Peralta knocked Helton down with a delivery at his feet.

Mark Grudzielanek scored an unearned run in the first after center fielder Willy Taveras misplayed Mark Teahen's single up the middle.
