DENVER (AP) The Colorado Rockies designated infielder John Mabry for assignment and recalled outfielder Ryan Spilborghs from Triple-A Colorado Springs before the game Saturday night against Kansas City.
Mabry was 4-for-34, batting .118 with one home run and five RBIs in 28 games for the Rockies this season. He was 1-for-21 as a pinch-hitter. The Rockies have 10 days to trade, release or outright him to the minor leagues.
Spilborghs played 68 games for the Rockies last season. This season with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, he is batting .323 with five home runs and 17 RBIs in 34 games.
Colorado now has 39 players on its 40-man roster.
Mabry and Spilborghs were vying for one of the final roster spots out of spring training. Manager Clint Hurdle went with Mabry because of his experience.
``I still feel confident that at the time we made the right decision,'' Hurdle said. ``At the present time, we need a little bit more from our bench. We felt it was an opportune time to bring Ryan up.''
