In the final year of his contract, Dan O’Dowd enjoyed his finest year as the Rockies’ GM. He was recognized by The Sporting News today, named Executive of the Year by his peers.
Coming off a disappointing 2008 season, O’Dowd began reshaping the team last winter. He traded all-star Matt Holliday for three players, including closer Huston Street and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, both of whom were critical to the Rockies’ playoff push. He also acquired Jason Marquis from the Cubs to fill the anticipated void because of Jeff Francis’ shoulder injury. Francis underwent season-ending surgery in February and Marquis earned his first-ever all-star berth. Prior to the season, O’Dowd landed Jason Hammel from the Rays.
He morphed into a key fifth starter.
With a playoff berth within reach, O’Dowd bolstered the bullpen late in the season, landing Rafael Betancourt, Joe Beimel and Jose Contreras.
