DENVER (AP) - Joe Sakic scored the go-ahead goal and Colorado defeated Calgary 6-to-3 in the season finale Sunday night.

However, it was a meaningless game after the Flames edged out the Avs for the final Western Conference playoff berth a day earlier, courtesy of Colorado's loss to Nashville.

The Avalanche are missing the playoffs for the first time since the team moved from Quebec 11 years ago.

Sunday night, Sakic's goal gave the Avalanche a 4-to-3 lead in the third period. He also assisted on goals by Andrew Brunette and Wojtek Wolski. Sakic finished the regular season with 100 points for the first time in six years. His 1, 589 career points are one shy of Phil Esposito for eighth place in league history.

Rookie Paul Stastny added a goal and assist Sunday night, giving him 78 points.
