COLORADO SPRINGS - The Tucson Sidewinders downed the Colorado Springs Sky Sox by the score of 5-4 tonight at Security Service Field in front of 2,548 fans as the Sky Sox opened up their 20th season with an unfortunate loss. Casey Daigle (1-0) picked up his first win in relief Mike Gallo (0-1) took the loss. Chad Harville worked a perfect ninth to notch his first save of the year.
The Sidewinders opened up the scoring in the first as they picked up a run on a double by clean-up hitter Jaime D'Antona. The hit scored Dave Krynzel who had doubled earlier in the inning off of Sky Sox starter Brian Lawrence. Second baseman Danny Richar plated their second run in the fourth with a RBI single that scored D'Antona and gave the Sidewinders a 2-0 lead.
The Sky Sox battled back to take the lead in the fifth as they plated three runs on four hits. Seth Smith started the scoring with a two-run triple and later scored on a RBI single by Joe Koshansky.
Lawrence ran into trouble in the sixth as three of the first four hitters singled but he was able to hold Tucson to just one run as the Sidewinders tied the game at 3-3.
Colorado Springs recaptured the lead in the bottom of the inning as Sullivan singled and moved to second on a groundout by Smith before scoring on a single by Ryan Spilborghs, who finished the night 3-for-5.
Tucson retook the lead in the eighth, scoring two unearned runs. Mike Gallo started the inning off by giving up a single and a walk before giving way to Zach McClellan. After striking out his first batter, McClellan induced a groundball to second but Omar Quintanilla bobbled the ball for an error to prolong the inning. The next batter, Augie Ojeda laced a sacrifice fly to center to tie the game and pinch-hitter Dee Brown spun a slow roller to third that barely nicked the third base bag for a RBI single.
The Sky Sox and Sidewinders will face off in game two of their four-game series tomorrow night at 6:05 PM. RHP Ubaldo Jimenez (0-0, 0.00) will take the mound for the Sox to face LHP Dana Eveland (0-0, 0.00).
