AFA Left Out of Big Dance

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- West Virginia, Clemson, Air Force and Mississippi State were number-one in the National Invitational Tournament that is a consolation prize for some of the teams that were snubbed by the N-C-A-A.

Once the N-C-A-A picked the 65-team field for its tournament, the N-I-T had the pick of the leftovers, which included Syracuse, Drexel, Kansas State and Washington,

For the second straight year, all Division One conference regular-season champions who lost in their conference tournaments and weren't picked for the N-C-A-As were guaranteed N-I-T bids. The N-I-T reduced its field from 40 to 32.
