A former backup punter for the University of Northern Colorado football team is due back in court next month for the next step in his assault and attempted murder case.

Mitch Cozad appeared in a Greeley courtroom Tuesday morning for a hearing to review evidence in the case.

But attorneys on both sides acknowledged it's taking longer than expected for some evidence to be processed. The judge said a deposition will be taken, or a trial date set, March 12th.

In January, a judge ordered Cozad to stand trial for attempted first-degree murder and second-degree assault in the 2006 attack on Rafael Mendoza, that left him with a deep knife wound in his kicking leg.

Cozad is free on a $500,000 bond.

He's returned home to Wheatland, Wyoming.
