With a loss in the second round of match play, Air Force golfer Tom Whitney (La Quinta, Calif.) has completed competition at the 2009 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, being held at the par-71, 7,289-yard Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman. Whitney was defeated, 4 and 3, by Chris Polski of Eugene, Ore.
After both golfers fired par on the opening hole, Polski took the lead with a birdie on the par-3 hole 2 and never relinquished his advantage. While Whitney turned in a solid performance with just one bogey (compared to three for Polski), but Polski fired eight birdies in the match to take an insurmountable lead with three holes left to play.
Whitney, a rising senior for the Falcons, continues his busy summer next week, when he is scheduled to play at the 2009 HealthONE Colorado Open. The Colorado Open will be held July 23-26 at the Green Valley Ranch Golf Club in Denver.
