The University of Colorado has announced the largest gift ever to its athletic department, a $4.75 million gift left by a woman who only briefly attended the university.

The school said Friday that 103-year-old Louise Bennett Reed made the athletic department her sole benficiary when she died last year. The school will use the money to endow 10 scholarships in football and men's and women's basketball.

School officials say Reed attended summer courses at CU in 1929 but earned college degreeds at other institutions. The woman volunteered tutoring athletes at CU after she retired.
