Fisher DeBerry Retires

By: KKTV

Air Force Academy Football Coach Fisher DeBerry has announced his retirement, calling it one of the most difficult decisions of his life.

DeBerry has spent the past 23 years as head coach.

He guided Air Force to three conference championships, but his tenure ended with three consecutive losing seasons -- the first such skid in his tenure at the school.

The 68-year-old DeBerry said in a prepared statement that his resignation was -- quote -- "the hardest decision I've ever made in my life."

DeBerry's record of 169-107-and-1 made him the winningest coach in Air Force history. He was 35-and-11 against Army and Navy, and led Air Force to 14 Commander-in-Chief's trophies awarded to the winner of the annual service academy rivalry.

Navy has won the last four trophies.

Quarterbacks coach Ken Hatfield hired DeBerry in 1980.

He was promoted to offensive coordinator a year later, and took over the program when Hatfield left Air Force following the 1983 season.
