Denver Nuggets star and Maryland native Carmelo Anthony is giving $1.5 million to a youth center in East Baltimore.
The Carmelo Anthony Youth Development Center offers after-school education and recreation programs to about 200 school-age children. It'll operate under a five-year grant from Anthony.
The 22-year-old appeared on an underground Baltimore DVD in 2004, which warned that people who cooperated with police could be killed. Anthony has said he was not aware of the DVD's message. Police have complained that such intimidation hinders criminal investigations.
Carmelo donated the money to the Baltimore-based Living Classrooms Foundation. That group was asked by a neighborhood association to manage a site formerly operated by the Boys and Girls Club of Central Maryland. The site serves six public housing communities.
The foundation is also working with The Annie E. Casey Foundation, the city and others to streamline and expand services for youth and families in East Baltimore.
