Air Force Academy golfer Tom Whitney shot a 5-under-par 65 Monday to grab a three-stroke lead heading into the final round of U.S. Amateur Public Links Sectional Qualifying at King’s Deer Golf Club.

Whitney, who won two college tournaments during his just-completed junior season at Air Force, holds a three-shot advantage over Riche Moore of Aurora. Reigning CGA Mid-Amateur champion Jon Lindstrom of Broomfield shares third place at 69 with Joseph Schwark of Broomfield and Kurtis Lucas of Colorado Springs.

The top three players after Tuesday’s final round will advance to the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship, set for July 13-18 in Norman, Okla.

Whitney, Moore and Lindstrom will tee off in the last threesome of Tuesday’s final round at 10 a.m.
