William (Willy) Shuman, who was scheduled to begin basic training at the Air Force Academy this week and play tennis for the Falcons, passed away Saturday, June 20 in an automobile accident in his hometown of Charleston, W.V. Shuman, 19, recently graduated from George Washington High School and was the No. 1 ranked junior tennis player in the state of West Virginia.

"The Air Force Academy lost an outstanding officer candidate with the passing of Willy Shuman. Willy exemplified many of the wonderful aspects that are displayed by the current Air Force officers on active duty. He would have been a great asset to our tennis team, both on and off the court. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this very difficult time," said Air Force head tennis coach Rich Gugat.
