Air Force dropped a 9-2 Mountain West Conference baseball game Saturday to BYU at Miller Field. The loss dropped the Falcons to 11-22, 2-7 and improved the Cougars to 20-13, 7-5.
BYU jumped ahead 9-0 after three innings and coasted to the rain-delayed win. Midway through the seventh inning, there was a 34-minute rain delay.
The Cougars racked up 13 hits on the day. Stetson Banks led the way offensively for BYU, going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Steve Parker also homered for BYU. Cougar starter Adam Miller (3-2) tossed six scoreless innings, striking out seven, for the win.
Air Force was held to six hits on the day. Six Falcons had base hits with Addison Gentry recording the lone extra-base hit with a double. Jack Lupo and Jon McMahon scored AFA’s runs.
Air Force starting pitcher Andrew Loyd (1-2) lasted just two-thirds of an inning, surrendering two runs. Air Force did get solid releif pitching from freshmen Michael Ceci and Mike Kazakoff, who combined to throw 5.1 scoreless innings. Ceci went 4.1 innings, scattering four hits and striking out one. Kazakoff pitched a scoreless eighth inning. Jason Griggs also pitched in relief.
Air Force returns to action Wed., April 15, with a doubleheader against Creighton at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb. First pitch for game one is slated for 4 p.m. CST.
