The Colorado Avalanche became sellers at the trade deadline, sending one of their top defenseman, Jordan Leopold, to the Calgary Flames today.
In return, the Avalanche acquired two defensemen, Lawrence Nycholat and Ryan Wilson, plus a second-round pick in the 2009 NHL draft.
The Avalanche usually orchestrate deals this time of year, not sell, but the team has tumbled into last place in the Western Conference with a 28-35-1 record.
Leopold is returning to a familiar spot, playing three seasons for the Flames before being acquired by Colorado on June 24, 2006.
Leopold has played in all 64 games for Colorado this season. He has six goals and 14 assists.
Avalanche general manager Francois Giguere (FRAN'-swah / zhee-GEHR') is scheduled to meet with the media later today.
