Chadron State 62, UCCS Women 61 (OT)

Samantha Arkulari made a free throw with seven seconds remaining to lift the Chadron State Eagles to a 62-61 overtime victory over the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Saturday evening at the Lions’ Den.

Nancy Hoist’s 3-point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark as the Mountain Lions dropped to 6-13, 4-7 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Hoist led UCCS with 21 points and 17 rebounds, both career highs, plus three assists. Jazzmin Awa-Williams added 16 points and Jessica Lynch had eight.

Sunni Busch led Chadron State (10-9, 5-6 RMAC) with 18 points and 17 rebounds. Kristy Long added 10 points and a game-high five assists.

Two free throws by Hoist tied the game with 1:02 left in the overtime. Each team had a chance but missed field goals in the final minute before Arkulari was fouled near the top of the key.

The Mountain Lions will long be kicking themselves that the overtime was necessary in the first place. Leading 20-19, Chadron State went an unbelievable 12:43 without a field goal, managing just 10 free throws over that period.

UCCS, however, was unable to capitalize, emerging from the spell with an uninspiring 38-30 lead.

The Mountain Lions led 43-33 with 8:35 remaining in regulation when Chadron State got back-to-back 3-pointers by Long and Busch to spark a 10-1 rally.

UCCS led by three with less than two minutes left but Long nailed another 3-pointer to tie the score at the 1:45 mark. The Mountain Lions missed three attempts and the Eagles two the rest of the way to send the game into overtime.
