Andrew Henke matched his career high with 23 points and season high with eight rebounds to lead Air Force past Texas-Pan American, 71-50, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference game at Clune Arena. Air Force improved to 7-2 on the year and posted its season-best fourth straight win. UTPA fell to 3-7 on the year.
The Falcons hit eight of their first 10 field goals and jumped out to a 19-9 lead in the first nine minutes of the game. Air Force, which never trailed in the game, held the lead with excellent shooting and solid defense. The Falcons closed the half with a 7-2 spurt over the final 1:04 to take a commanding 40-26 halftime advantage. Air Force held UTPA to just two field goals over the final seven minutes of the first half.
Air Force raced away in the second half, scoring the first six points and out-scoring UTPA, 17-8, in the first eight and one-half minutes to take a 57-34 lead with 11:21 remaining in the game. UTPA never got closer than 18 points after that. The Falcons led by as many as 24 at one point, 67-43, with 2:57 left after a Henke layup.
The Falcons closed the game hitting 51.9 percent from the field on 28 of 54 shooting, including a 50.0 clip (9-18) from three-point range. Air Force out-rebounded the Broncos, 36-21, and grabbed 10 offensive rebounds.
Evan Washington added 11 points and five rebounds while Anwar Johnson chipped in with 10 points and five rebounds. Mike McLain had career highs of six points and four rebounds while freshman Trevor Noonan added seven points and a career-high six rebounds.
UTPA was led by Emmanuel Jones, who had 15 points and six rebounds. He was the only Bronco in double figures. UTPA finished the game hitting just 37.5 percent from the field, connecting on just nine of 24 field goals in each half.
The Falcons are idle for the next nine days until playing host to Texas Southern on Dec. 22.
