The Colorado Rockies announced tonight that the club will not tender a contract to outfielder Willy Taveras for the 2009 season.
Taveras, who turns 27 on Christmas Day, hit .251 (120-for-479) in 133 games for the Rockies in 2008. The speedy outfielder led the Majors with 68 steals last season. Taveras has spent two seasons with the Rockies since he was acquired from Houston along with right-handed pitchers Taylor Buchholz and Jason Hirsh in exchange for Jason Jennings in December 2006. In all or parts of five Major League seasons with the Rockies (2007-08) and Astros (2004-06), Taveras owns a .283 (558-for-1973) average with 7 home runs, 109 RBI and 169 stolen bases.
The Rockies now have 39 players on the 40-man roster.
