The Colorado Rapids have removed the "interim" tag from Gary Smith's title and named him the sixth head coach of the Major League Soccer franchise.

Smith took over on an interim basis after former coach Fernando Clavijo left the team for personal reasons in August. Smith coached the Rapids to a month of undefeated play in September and three road wins.

Smith joined the Rapids in February. He was previously a full-time coach and professional player with the English FA. He spent one year with Colchester United, two years with Barnet F.C., and four years with Fulham F.C.

Colorado was knocked out of 2008 playoff contention last month, and finished the season 11-14-5.
