On a day when the Colorado Avalanche went through fitness tests, captain Joe Sakic pulled rank and instituted what he called the "old-man rule."
His teammates didn't begrudge him taking it easy yesterday, though. They're just glad Sakic is back for a 20th season.
Sakic's return calmed an otherwise turbulent offseason for the Avalanche. After being swept by Detroit in the second round of the playoffs, the team lost Jeff Finger, Andrew Brunette, Kurt Sauer and Jose Theodore to free agency.
But it also added some grit with Per Ledin, Daniel Tjarnqvist, Darcy Tucker and Brian Willsie.
The team parted ways with coach Joel Quenneville, hiring Tony Granato for a second stint. Granato has promised an up-tempo offense this year.
