Joe Sakic says he will play in 2008 and 2009.

Sakic signed a one-year contract with the Colorado Avalanche after spending months pondering retirement.

He took longer than normal to decide whether to return for a 20th season with the only franchise he has played for. He says he came to the conclusion that he still enjoys playing and competing.

Because the Democratic convention has been taking place this week at the Pepsi Center, the Avs' home, the team says it won't hold a news conference until next week.
