The Broncos like their depth on defense, but injuries are taking a toll on the unit.

Defensive end Elvis Dumervil and safety Marquand Manuel both suffered injuries to their right hands during Friday's 27-24 pre-season loss to Green Bay. They both had surgery Saturday, and both hold out hope they can play in the team's season opener at Oakland on September 7th.

Manuel fractured his right thumb playing on special teams in the second half. Dumervil suffered a broken pinkie in the first half. Both were sporting casts Monday.

Manuel was getting significant playing time because of Hamza Abdullah's lingering groin injury.

Dumervil's injury, and the absence of Ebenezer Ekuban, mean the Broncos will rely on youth at defensive end. Ekuban didn't practice yesterday because of back spasms.
