The Colorado Avalanche have used their first pick in the NHL draft to select 18-year-old defenseman Cameron Gaunce.

Gaunce, a left-handed shooter, was picked up in the second round on Saturday. He played in the Ontario Hockey League last season and the Central Skating Bureau ranks him as 91st among North American skaters.

Colorado also had the 110th pick but traded Brad Richardson to the Los Angeles Kings for the 61st pick. They used it to select 18-year-old goalie Peter Delmas.

Richardson had been a top prospect for the Avs but he's been dealing with a wrist injury and spent much of last season playing in the minor leagues.
