Rocco Mediate and Tiger Woods have finished in a tie at the U.S. Open, which will be decided in an 18-hole playoff for the first time since 2001. Woods forced the playoff with a clutch 12-foot birdie putt on the 72nd hole.
The playoff at Torrey Pines will be tomorrow. It will start at noon Eastern time.
Woods will try to win his 14th major. The 45-year-old Mediate has never won a major and will try to become the oldest player to win the U.S. Open.
Mediate was watching on TV when Woods made his final putt. Mediate said Woods was "unbelievable. I knew he'd make it."
Woods shot 2-over 73 to tie Mediate at 1-under 283.
Mediate shot even-par 71. He had a chance to win the tournament on the 18th hole but his 30-foot birdie putt curled just to the right of the hole.
Lee Westwood finished third. He could have joined the playoff but missed a birdie putt on the final hole.
The U.S. Open is the only major with an 18-hole playoff. The last time it happened was seven years ago, when Retief (reh-TEEF') Goosen beat Mark Brooks at Southern Hills.
