Tiger Woods had two eagles and a birdie on his final six holes to take a one-shot lead after three rounds of the U.S. Open. Woods is 3 under for his 54 holes, one shot better than Englishman Lee Westwood.

After starting the day with a double-bogey, Woods was five shots off the lead on his back nine before catching fire. He eagled number-13 with a 65-foot putt to start his charge. Then he chipped in from the fringe on 17 for his birdie. On the 18th hole, he rolled in an eagle putt to seize the lead.

Woods admitted after the round that his surgically repaired left knee is hurting him. He had surgery two months ago and this is his first event since.

Woods is seeking his third U.S. Open title and 14th major crown.

Woods will be paired with Westwood on the final round. Westwood shot a 1-under 70 to move to 2 under for the tourney.

Rocco Mediate is alone in third place at 1 under, two shots behind Woods. Geoff Ogilvy and D.J. Trajan are tied for fourth, four shots off the lead.

Sergio Garcia has recovered from two poor rounds and shot 1-under 70 today to move 3 over par.

Local favorite Phil Mickelson had a long day. Mickelson had a quadruple-bogey 9 on the par-5 13th en route to a 5-over 76. Mickelson is 9 over for the tourney.
