San Diego State’s eight-run sixth inning broke open a tight game as the Aztecs defeated Air Force, 14-6, in Mountain West Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at Falcon Field. The loss drops the Falcons to 16-28, 2-15 and improved the Aztecs to 28-21, 14-7.
With Air Force holding a 2-1 lead into the fifth, SDSU sent 12 batters to the plate and were up 9-2 after all was said and done.
San Diego State had 16 hits and three home runs in the game. Cory Vaughn, Erik Castro and Nick Romero homered for the Aztecs. Brandon Decker, Troy Hanzawa and Romero had three hits in the game for SDSU.
The Falcons had 11 hits in the game. Nathan Carter, Chay Derbigny, Ben Ausbun and Daniel Walker had two hits each for AFA. Derbigny hit his fifth homer and Carter hit his seventh triple of the season.
Air Force starter Jake Petro (1-6) took the loss, allowing seven runs in 5.1 innings pitched. Petro held San Diego State in check for the first five innings, allowing just one run at that point. The junior ran out of steam in the sixth however and did not make it out of the inning. Brad Pingel, Jason Griggs, Colin Shepherd and Michael Ruvolo finished out the game in relief.
Aztec starter Nate Solow (4-6) picked up the win, going seven innings and giving up three runs while striking out six. Brandon Pullen, Shane Kaufman and Addison Reed combined to pitch the final two innings for SDSU.
Air Force held an early lead as Derbigny hit a solo homer in the fourth for the first run of the game. Vaughn then followed with a solo blast of his own in the top of the fifth tie the ballgame. The Falcons rebounded with a run in the bottom of the inning to retake a 2-1 lead before the Aztecs’ big sixth inning. The Falcons later plated a run in the sixth and three in the ninth.
Air Force returns to action next Friday, May 9, hosting Utah in a four-game series.
