FORT COLLINS, Colo.—Colorado State senior offensive tackle Ty Sambrailo continues to garner significant preseason attention, today being named to the preseason watch list for the 2014 Rotary Lombardi Award. Sambrailo earned second-team All-MW recognition in 2013 as he helped lead CSU’s offense to school records in nearly every major category.
The 6-5, 315-pound Sambrailo is one of 123 athletes named to the watch list from 76 universities, including 11 from the Mountain West.
Eligibility for the Rotary Lombardi Award is limited to down linemen, end-to-end, either on offense or defense, who set up no farther than 10 yards to the left or right of the ball, or linebackers who set up no farther than five yards deep from the line of scrimmage
Sambrailo’s inclusion on the Lombardi Award Watch List adds to his impressive preseason list of honors projecting his performance in 2014. He has been named first-team preseason All-MW by The Sporting News, USA Today, Lindy’s and Athlon Sports, and second team by Phil Steele’s College Football Preview.
In 2013 Sambrailo garnered second-team All-Mountain West honors by vote of coaches and media after starting all 14 games at left tackle and helping propel the Rams to their most productive offensive performance in school history. Behind Sambrailo and his offensive line-mates CSU set school records for points (507) and yards (470.8) per game, and rushed for their greatest per-game average (204.4) since 2002 while topping the 500-yard mark eight times, most in school history.
Sambrailo in 2013 graded out above 89% in every game and recorded 47 knockdown blocks as the Rams' offensive line allowed just 22 sacks, the team’s second-fewest since 2003 (18). In three games against first-team All-MW defensive linemen DeMarcus Lawrence (Boise State), Brock Hekking (Nevada) and Eddie Yarbrough (Wyoming) he did not allow a sack and graded out above 92% in each game with a total of 11 knockdown blocks.
The native of Watsonville, Calif., is one of nine active offensive linemen in NCAA Division I FBS with 2,500-plus career snaps played. He enters 2014 having been on the field for 2,514 snaps in his 37-game career, which includes 31 starts. A versatile lineman, Sambrailo has started games at both left and right tackle, as well as both left and right guard.
