ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Athletic Club will honor Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker and former Vice President of Corporate Communications Jim Saccomano at its 39th Annual Athlete of the Year Banquet on Wednesday, it was announced.
Welker, who totaled 73 receptions for 778 yards (10.7 avg.) with a career-high 10 touchdowns in his first season with the Broncos in 2013, will headline the banquet as the DAC’s 2014 Colorado Athlete of the Year.
The 10th-year pro helped the Broncos finish as the highest-scoring unit (606 pts.) in NFL history last season as the team won its third consecutive AFC West title and advanced to Super Bowl XLVIII.
Previous Broncos recipients of the DAC’s Athlete of the Year award include cornerback Champ Bailey, quarterback John Elway, wide receiver Ed McCaffrey, linebacker Von Miller and quarterback Jake Plummer.
Saccomano, who recently retired following his 36th year with the Broncos, will receive a lifetime achievement award from the Denver Athletic Club.
He has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the inaugural Pete Rozelle Award (1990), given annually to the NFL’s outstanding public relations staff, and the Charlie Callahan Award for Public Relations. The press box at Sports Authority Field at Mile High was re-named in his honor last season.
The longest-tenured pro sports administrator in Colorado history at the time of his retirement, Saccomano currently works in a consulting role with the Broncos.
A portion of the proceeds from the banquet and silent auction will benefit Mile High Squash, a non-profit local program that is based out of The Denver Athletic Club and supports lower income and minority youths.
