ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Wednesday signed free-agent defensive tackle Sione Fua and placed defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson on injured reserve, it was announced.
Fua (6-0, 310 pounds) is a third-year player who saw action in 27 games (12 starts) for Carolina over the last three seasons after being drafted by the Panthers in the third round (97th overall) of the 2011 NFL Draft. His career totals include 32 tackles (19 solo) and one forced fumble.
He started 11 games as a rookie in 2011 before being sidelined by a hamstring injury late in the season. He contributed 17 tackles (8 solo) in a career-high 13 games (1 start) last season for the Panthers. Fua was waived by Carolina on Nov. 12.
A second-team All-Pacific 10 Conference selection at Stanford University as a senior, Fua played 50 career games (31 starts) for the Cardinal and totaled 80 tackles, 16 tackles for a loss, nine sacks, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery.
Fua attended Crespi Carmelite High School in Encino, Calif., and was born on June 15, 1988. His name is pronounced see-OH-nay FOO-ah. He will wear jersey No. 98.
