ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Tuesday released linebacker Joe Mays, it was announced.
Mays started 21-of-24 regular-season games played for the Broncos during the last three seasons, totaling 124 tackles (96 solo), 0.5 sacks (3.5 yds.) and three passes defensed. He also opened both postseason contests for the club during the 2011 campaign, contributing 15 tackles (9 solo) and one pass defensed.
He was selected by Philadelphia in the sixth round (200th overall) of the 2008 NFL Draft and played two seasons for the Eagles before being acquired by the Broncos in a trade in 2010. In five NFL seasons, Mays saw time in 47 regular-season games (22 starts) and recorded 131 tackles 0.5 sacks (3.5 yds.) and three passes defensed. He also tallied 30 tackles and one forced fumble on special teams during his career.
A product of North Dakota State University, Mays played 43 games (31 starts) for the Bison during his collegiate career and earned first-team Division I-AA honors in addition to Great West Conference Defensive Player of the Year recognition in 2007.
He attended Hyde Park Career Academy in Chicago was born on July 6, 1985.
