ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie was named AFC Defensive Player of the Week, the NFL informed the Broncos on Wednesday.
Rodgers-Cromartie totaled five tackles (4 solo), three passes defensed and an interception returned 75 yards for a touchdown in Denver’s 45-21 win against the Washington Redskins on Sunday.
His touchdown, which came with just over two minutes remaining in the game and represented the sixth-longest pick-six in team history, helped clinch the win for the Broncos, who enter their bye week with a 7-1 record. The sixth-year player, who is in his first season with the Broncos, has totaled an NFL-high 94 passes defensed since he entered the NFL in 2008. He also owns the third-most interceptions returned for touchdowns (5) during that span.
The award represents the second such honor of Rodgers-Cromartie’s career as he was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week in 2009 (vs. Hou., 10/11; 49-yard game-winning INT-TD). It also marks the 26th time a Bronco has been named AFC Defensive Player of the Week since the award was initiated in 1984.
He joins quarterback Peyton Manning (Weeks 1 & 3) and return specialist Trindon Holliday (Week 2) as Broncos to earn conference player of the week accolades this season.
