Now that new Broncos kicker Matt Prater replaced Jason Elam on the team's roster, the 24-year-old wants a chance to replace him on the record books.
Prater booted a 55-yard-field goal to give the Broncos a win 16-13 over Tampa Bay Sunday with a kick that had enough distance to be good from 70 yards.
Now Prater says he wants the chance to break the NFL's field goal record of 63 yards held by Tom Dempsey and Elam.
Prater has piled up a league-high 51 points and has made all four of his field goals from 50 yards or more.
The Broncos signed him in December after Todd Sauerbrun wore out his welcome in Denver and they needed somebody to handle kickoffs for their last two games. But Coach Mike Shanahan saw enough of Prater's powerful right leg to give him a chance at kicker and let Elam go to Atlanta in free agency.
