Denver Broncos center Tom Nalen underwent arthroscopic surgery on cartilage in his left knee on Friday but is expected to be ready in time for July training camp.
"Anybody having a scope should be able to play within two weeks," coach Mike Shanahan said.
"Where we're at right now and the shape Tom is in, he should be full speed by the time we go to camp in July," Shanahan said. The 14-year veteran has played in 194 games, including 188 starts. Only two Broncos have played in more: kicker Jason Elam, now with the Falcons, who played in 236 games, and retired quarterback John Elway, who played in 234.
The Broncos have a veteran backup center in Casey Wiegmann, a 13-year pro signed in the offseason.
"Backing up Tom, Casey has been very impressive when Tom has gone down," Shanahan said.
Rookie center Cory Lichtensteiger, a fourth-round draft pick out of Bowling Green, is still recovering from surgery for a torn labrum in his right shoulder.
"Cory will not be able to practice until we go to our July camp," Shanahan said. "He's had some mental reps which is has been good."
Last year, Nalen suffered a season-ending biceps injury in Game 6 against San Diego.
Tight end Tony Scheffler, who broke his left food during quarterback camp on May 19, showed signs of improvement Friday while catching passes and running pass patterns after practice.
Cornerback Dre' Bly had the play of the day in Friday's workouts, stepping in front of a Jay Cutler pass intended for Brandon Stokley and high-stepping 10 yards into the end zone.
