Roster Moves: Broncos Waive Cox, Gordon, Clark

The Denver Broncos on Tuesday made several roster transactions, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced.

The club signed wide receiver Taylor Jacobs along with defensive ends Larry Birdine, Paul Carrington and Josh Mallard. Denver also placed rookie defensive end Jarvis Moss on its reserve/injured list with a fractured right fibula suffered during Thursday’s practice.

To make room for their roster additions, the Broncos waived wide receiver Brian Clark, safety Curome Cox and defensive tackle Amon Gordon.

Taylor Jacobs (6-foot-1, 210 pounds) is a fifth-year wide receiver who joins the Broncos from San Francisco, which waived him on Oct. 2. He saw time in four games (0 starts) for the 49ers this year, totaling three catches for 40 yards (13.3 avg.) with one touchdown.

For his career, Jacobs has played 50 career games (7 starts) and posted 37 receptions for 384 yards (10.4 avg.) with two touchdowns. He spent his first three seasons with the Redskins, who selected him in the second round (44th overall) of the 2003 NFL Draft from the University of Florida, before he was traded to the 49ers on Aug. 14, 2006.

A first-team All-Southeastern Conference selection as a senior at Florida, Jacobs attended Florida A&M High School in Tallahassee, Fla., and was born on May 30, 1981.

Larry Birdine (6-foot-4, 265 pounds) is a rookie defensive end who joins the Broncos from Tennessee’s practice squad, where he spent the first nine weeks of the season. The University of Oklahoma product entered the NFL as a college free agent with Green Bay on May 4 and was waived by the Packers on Sept. 2 before signing with the Titans on Sept. 4.

In four seasons at Oklahoma, Birdine played 41 games (14 starts) and totaled 103 tackles (61 solo) and 14.5 sacks for his career. He attended Eisenhower High School in Lawton, Okla., and was born on Oct. 6, 1983.

Paul Carrington (6-foot-7, 250 pounds) is a second-year defensive end who joins the Broncos from Atlanta, which waived him on Sept. 1. He entered the NFL with the Falcons as a rookie free agent from the University of Central Florida on May 1, 2006.

During his rookie season with Atlanta last year, Carrington played 15 games (2 starts) and totaled 33 tackles, three sacks (19 yds.), one forced fumble and two pass breakups.

Carrington finished his four-year career at Central Florida by posting nine sacks and 46 tackles as a senior. A graduate of Effingham County High School in Springfield, Ga., Carrington was born on Nov. 10, 1982.

Josh Mallard (6-foot-2, 259 pounds) is a third-year defensive end who joins the Broncos from Atlanta, which waived him on Oct. 13. He played three games (0 starts) for the Falcons this year after seeing time in 14 games (1 start) and recording four sacks for the club in 2006.

For his career, Mallard has played 30 career games (1 start) and totaled 23 tackles (21 solo), five sacks (30 yds.), four pass breakups, four fumble recoveries and two forced fumbles. He was selected by Indianapolis in the seventh round (220th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft from the University of Georgia and has seen time on the rosters of the Colts (2002-03, ’05) and Dolphins (2004).

Mallard’s 18 career sacks at Georgia ranked fifth in school history, and he appeared in 43 games for his collegiate career. Mallard, who attended Benedictine Military Academy in Savannah, Ga., was born on March 21, 1979.
