D-49 School District officials will soon learn whether several elementary schools closed for mold removal are clean. Air sample test results are expected by Friday, August 3rd.

The schools were closed in mid-July, after the mold was found. Since then, special contractors have been working to clean it all up.

Here is the news release sent out Tuesday:

Work is nearly complete at the seven district elementary schools closed earlier in July for mold removal. The schools are:
Meridian Ranch Elementary School
Odyssey Elementary School
Remington Elementary School
Ridgeview Elementary School
Springs Ranch Elementary School
Stetson Elementary School
Woodmen Hills Elementary School

On Sunday, July 22 mitigation contractors began cleaning these schools under an industrial hygienist's supervision using appropriate containment and cleaning processes. The specialized contractors contained and removed mold wherever it was discovered.

On Friday, July 27, the industrial hygienist conducted a post-mitigation/final clearance inspection at all of the affected schools except Remington Elementary at which cleanup was not quite complete. The hygienist found no mitigation-related debris or visible mold in any cleanup area. Contractors are now repairing drywall and painting the cleaned areas. It is the industrial hygienist's opinion that as soon as each classroom is restored, it can be reopened and available to staff members.

Front offices at the six inspected schools have been moved back into the school buildings and common spaces again are open to the public. Remington Elementary School's front office and common areas are expected to open by mid-week.

As a last step in the cleanup process, final air sample tests were taken Friday, July 27. Results are expected on Friday, August 3. At Remington Elementary, the air sample test will be conducted tomorrow, Monday, July 30. The minor delay may possibly postpone the school's opening date. The school district will know more as the week progresses. The other six schools are expected to open on schedule.

The cause of the mold growth is still being determined. As a part of the mitigation process, vinyl wall covering was removed from all exterior walls in the school district that have the same wall construction. Removing the vinyl may be all that is necessary to prevent any further problems. An investigative engineer has been hired to evaluate each school. His report is expected to instruct the district on any other necessary steps.
