The Colorado Springs school board is looking at how it can cut $11 million from the budget for the next school year.
The district’s Chief Financial Officers says there will be pay cuts, and possibly some layoffs. Those have not been outlined yet, but there is a long list of proposed cuts for more than 100 district-wide programs.
A list of proposed cuts was presented to the board Wednesday night, but D11 officials said they have to come up with $11-16 million in total cuts for the next school year. "With these kinds of reductions it will either affect the number of staff we have or how much money staff makes," said Glenn Gustafson, the district’s C.F.O. "You can't do things the same way, when you're talking about those kinds of reductions."
Each of the district’s 143 programs will take some sort of cut, and some may be completely eliminated.
The programs which would be most affected by the proposals include the Summer Literacy Program and staff. It may lose almost a million dollars which would kill the program all together. Another $84,000, which is meant for summer school for high school students, could also be dropped. Schools may also lose $17,500 to replace old and worn textbooks.
The recommendations come from two separate committees. The first is the district’s accountability committee, which is made up of citizens. The other group is made up of district staff.
No decisions on the budget cuts were made at Wednesday night’s meeting. The district will wait until next month to vote on a preliminary budget.
D-11 did save about $3 million by closing several schools last year. Gustafson said more schools may close in the coming years.

School dist.11 will get what they deserve.Dist.11 has been a joke for years now. Finally the evil-doings of all of the school board members for d-11 are coming back to haunt them.Thank god my child no longer goes to d-11 schools anymore. The school board members need to be fired or go to jail. The parents of d-11 need to step up and let the joke of colorado springs schools (d-11 school board members)know how they feel.
This will be a disaster for our children. They are our future and we are stunting their growth by cutting education even a little bit. Education should always be top priority and with state wide and federal cuts, it has obviously been put in the background. Cut the CSAP testing programs, use the time and money dedicated to that and buy new books for our children.
