More schoolchildren in Pueblo County will be walking to school. A school district is trimming bus service next year to save money.
Pueblo County School District 70 says it will save $538,000 by requiring students living within a certain distance of a school to walk or get their own transportation to school.
Service will stop for elementary school students within a quarter-mile of school. For middle and high school students, service will stop within a half-mile of school.
Also, the district is trimming its service for its high school to only four regional stops. Bu drivers will also be instructed to stop no longer than one minute per stop.
Elaine Naleski with School District 11 in Colorado Springs tells 11 News the district discussed this same idea during budget meetings in June. They discussed ways to save money by reducing bus routes and/or adding routes for timing reasons. D11 says they decided now is not the right time with the current economy to put a burden on families by eliminating bus routes.
